Abstract
370,146. Brakes. EVANS, W. E., 27, Chancery Lane, London.-(Demag Akt.- Ges. ; Duisburg, Germany.) March 2, 1931, No. 6446. [Class 103 (i).] A brake is operated by an electromagnet having a stationary coil 7 and a central core 8 carried by a shaft 1 which is moved axially to actuate the brake 9 (shown as a friction clutch member) against the action of a spring not shown. A conical end face on the core 8 co-operates with a corresponding face on the magnet casing 6, which is mounted by means of flanges on a gear box 3. The member 10 of the clutch may be pressed by a spring 12 against a fixed part 11 to brake the driven shaft 5 when the clutch is disengaged, and if the members 9, 10 are arranged not to separate completely the braking effect is applied to the member 9 also. Gearing 2, 4 for driving the shaft 1 is placed between the clutch and the electromagnet. The magnet coil may consist of a polyphase motor winding with a tapered bore co-operating with a conical core consisting of thin insulated metal discs.
