Abstract

556,985. Cone brakes. LANCASHIRE DYNAMO & CRYPTO, Ltd., and TORRY, W. D. July 7, 1942, No. 9425. [Class 103 (i)] A brake comprises a conical brake drum mounted upon a shaft to be braked so as to rotate therewith and a non-rotatable conical brake member or members movable axially to engage the drum by springs and disengaged by an electromagnet. In one construction, Fig. 1, a conical brake drum A keyed to the shaft B of an electric motor M is engaged by the correspondingly shaped part of a member C secured to the movable part E of a D.C. electromagnet which is carried by bolts J slidable in a fixed part G of the magnet. The member C has a friction lining D and is held against rotation by interengaging slots and projections C<SP>1</SP> on it and the part G. Springs F urge the members C, E towards the drum A. The brake may be disengaged by hand by nuts J<SP>1</SP>. The magnet may be arranged to be de-energized to apply the brake when the motor circuit is broken. The fixed part of the magnet comprises in addition to the part G which is gapped to accommodate the bolts J, the inner part K and coil H. In another construction provided with an A.C. magnet, this magnet comprises two or three solenoids, according as the current is single or three phase, disposed on each side of the shaft. In a further construction, Fig. 5, also shown as provided with a single phase magnet the drum A is splined on the shaft B and is arranged to be gripped between the fixed member C<SP>2</SP> and a member C which is movable axially by the springs F and is secured to the movable part E<SP>1</SP> of the magnet. Hand release of the brake is effected by the nut K<SP>1</SP> and screwed rod K<SP>2</SP>. The member C<SP>2</SP> may be adjusted by shims S.
