Abstract
282,876. Oliver, C. H., and Oliver, J. E. Sept. 27, 1926. Electric and magnetic.-A brake for vehicles consists of a disc moving wholly or in part in and relatively to a magnetic field, either the disc or the electromagnetic system providing the field being permanently fixed. The disc may be solid, perforated, or hollow. The strength cf the brake is controlled (1) by varying the strength of the field by means of a variable resistance, or by having varying numbers of the electromagnets in operation, or by switching from parallel to series winding or vice versa, (2) by moving the electromagnets radially to the disc, (3) by varying the distance between the disc and the poles of the magnets, (4) by varying the speed of the disc, or (5) by a combination of these methods. In one modification of the invention, the disc a is provided with two flanges a<1>, and is mounted on a shaft b. The magnetic system comprises iron cores d having windings e and fixed to an anchor plate c. The disc is geared or fixed to the transmission and the magnetic, system is fixed to the gear casing or the chassis. To release the brake the magnets may be moved radially of the disc to clear its periphery or close to the centre of the disc in order to have no retarding influence thereon.
