A device for signalling from a hoist cage 8 to a winder drive 13 comprises a permanent magnet 1 mechanically coupled with a control handle 5, the permanent magnet being positionable to influence variable inductor pick-ups 9 in the shaft, and with the control handle located within the cage. The permanent magnet may have a ferro-magnetic yoke with two pole-pieces, the control handle having two positions in one of which a signal is applied to a pick-up. Alternatively, the control handle has more than two positions, each corresponding to stopping-position for the cage. The pick-ups each comprise a closed double-cored A.C. choke having a centre tapping with the windings arranged uniformly on both cores. Each pick-up is connected in a bridge circuit with a centre tapped secondary winding of a transformer. When the permanent magnet influences the choke, the bridge is unbalanced and an A.C. signal is supplied through an amplifier to the control system for the winder. The pick-ups may be spaced horizontally from each other relative to the cage, the spacings corresponding to the positions of the permanent magnet. Each pick-up may be equipped with steel checks to form extensions of the cores.
