Abstract

370,025. Exhaust silencers. HAYNES, A. J. L., Port Haney, British Columbia, Canada. Oct. 29, 1930, No. 32479. Convention date, Nov. 21, 1929. [Class 7 (ii).] The silencer comprises a casing divided into a number of baffleless expansion chambers connected together in series by passages or ducts which increase in cross-sectional area throughout their length and are adapted to impart rotary motion to the gases. The casing 6, which has an exhaust inlet 7 and an outlet 17, is divided into a number of expansion chambers 10 .. 13 by helical passages 9 the cross section of each of which increases according to an exponential law as applied to acoustics. The pipe 7 discharges into the casing through 'an inclined nozzle 8 which sets the gases rotating; and this rotation is continued by the helical passages. The expansion chambers are stated to utilize the elasticity of the gas to absorb sudden increases of pressure, and the helical passages form the gas into a column to utilize its mass to the utmost to oppose sudden changes in the rate of flow.
