Abstract
369,063. Sound reproducing and transmitting devices. BLUMLEIN, A. D., 57, Earl's Court Squars, and HOLMAN, H. E., 64A, The Chase, Clapham Common, both in London. May 13, 1931, No. 14182. [Class 40 (iv).] An electroacoustic device comprises a rigid piston-like diaphragm connected at its periphery to a flexible air-sealing surround, the resonant vibrations of the surround being damped. Preferably the surround is shielded and supports the diaphragm. As applied to a microphone the diaphragm a<1> is supported by an annulus c<1>, a shield m<1> lying close to the surround to provide air damping. A groove x<1> in the shield increases damping and a similar shield may be fitted at the rear of the diaphragm. Alternatively a packing of cotton wool or other damping material may rest lightly against the surround. To allow of variations of atmospheric pressure to be equalized on both sides of the diaphragm, capillary tunnels may be provided leading to the cavity behind the diaphragm. The main resonance of the diaphragm is damped electromagnetically as in Specifications 350,954 and 350,998. In other respects the microphone is identical with that described in Specification 350,998. The invention is also applicable to loud-speakers.
