Abstract

In stethoscopic type stereophonic earphones each ear engaging member is coupled to both transducers by acoustic paths of different lengths. Fig. 1 shows one embodiment in which the ears of the user are engaged by devices 4 and 5 and coupled to the transducers 7 and 8 by a tube 6, the tube extending between the transducers so that sound from transducer 7, say, is coupled to ear engaging device 4 over a first length of tube, and to the ear engaging device 5 over a length of tube longer than the first length of tube by approximately the distance between the user's ears. The arrangement is said to give effective stereophonic reproduction on signals intended to he reproduced by spaced apart loud-speakers. The tube between the transducers may be telescopic to allow adjustment of the path length difference. Fig. 3 shows another embodiment in which the transducers are coaxially mounted on coupling members 23 and 24 which acoustically couple the transducer to the ear engaging tubes 26 and 28 and to a further coupling member 25 which couples each transducer to one end of a trombone type slide 29, 30, 31, by means of which the acoustic path length between the transducers is adjusted. In a modification the transducers are mounted sideby-side and coupled by a trombone type slide, Fig. 2 (not shown).
