A mounting structure for microphone and receiver transducers is convertible from a rigid hand-held device (Fig. 1) to an adjustable head-mounted device (Fig. 2). The handset-headset structure uses a receiver 15 which is acoustically coupled to the ear canal through a conical earpiece 13. A stabilizing pad 37 is disposed above the earpiece 13 for steadying the structure on the user's head and is mounted at the upper end of a rotatably pivoted portion 11. It is separable into an upper pad 53 which is attached to a telescoping headband 49, 51 and a lower pad 59 which is attached to the portion 11. The headband 49, 51 telescopes into the structure past a rotatable pivot 35 connecting portions 9 and 11 to secure the pivot 35 and render the structure rigid to serve as a hand-held microphone and receiver. When fully extended, the headband 49, 51 releases the pivot 35 to enable the lower portion 9, including the receiver 15 and a microphone 17, to be rotated forward with respect to the upper portion 11 including the headband 49, 51 and stabilizing pad 37 so that the microphone input port 19 may be positioned near the user's mouth. A channel 18 connects the port 19 to the microphone 17. If a noisecancelling microphone is used a pair of channels 18 is used. Where desired, the microphone 17 may be near the lower end 21 to eliminate the channel or channels 18. The earpiece 13 is conical and is readily deformable in the lateral and peripheral portions but relatively rigid longitudinally. Thus the wall 25 of the channel 23 is thicker than the wall 27. Electronic components 29 include a switch mechanically coupled to a spring-biased button 31 providing push-to-talk operation. The lower portion 9 is in left- and right-halves 32, 34 for easy assembly of components and transducers.
