Abstract

367,761. Liquid resistances. FUCHS, C., 12, Schifflõnde, Zurich, Switzerland. Aug. 22, 1930, No. 25131. Convention date, Sept. 4, 1929. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 37.] An electric heater, particularly adapted for heating liquids, comprises two electrodes 5, 6 separated by ar absorbent compound 8, such as gypsum, clay, or asbestos, in which an elec trolyte, such as glycerine or water, is absorbed Fig. 1 shows an immersior heater in which the elec trodes are oppositely directed helices 5, 6 on ar insulating core 4, the upper ends of the helices being unconnected. Alter natively, the helices may be concentric and separated by a cylinder of asbestos, and an insulating tube may pass through the heater for the passage of liquid to be heated. In a further modification, Fig. 3, the electrode 6 is formed by a bored conducting tube 13 arranged centrally so that the liquid to be heated passes through bores 16 into the absorbent mass 8 at the lower, or upper, end of the tube and back into the tube at the opposite end. In this case the electrolyte is formed by the liquid to be heated. Alternatively, in the modification in Fig. 3, the tube 1 may be conductive and replace the electrode 5. In a further modification, Fig. 5, plate electrodes 18, 19 are separated by an absorbent pad 8 soaked with the electrolyte and further absorbent slabs 20 separate the electrodes from the casing 21. The electrodes 18, 19 may also be formed of metal strainers, perforated plates, or spirally coiled wire.
