Abstract

383,608. Stuffing-boxes. MIGUET, P. L. J. and PERRON, M. P., St-Julien-de- Maurienne, Savoy, France. Feb. 10, 1931, No. 4177. Convention date, Feb. 20, 1930. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. [Class 122 (v).] An electrically conductive paste is fed under pressure to the annular space between the current conducting member 4 surrounding the electrode 9 and the electrode itself. The paste solidifies in the annular space due to heat and the absorbent action of the electrode. The paste is fed from a reservoir through conduits 3 in the member 4. Openings 6 admit the paste from the conduits to the annular space. The member 4 is cooled by water circulation through conduits 5. Centrings 11 formed with prismatic wedges may be used with large electrodes. In a modification the paste and water conduits are arranged vertically. If the electrodes are baked in situ perforated or gauze sleeves are used therefor and the centring devices are arranged in the same horizontal plane as the paste conduits instead of being arranged above them. A suitable paste is formed by a mixture of 450 parts of carbon, 200 parts of sugar, and 350 parts of water. Specification 313,121, [Class 39 (iii), Heating by electricity], is referred to.
