Abstract

<PICT:0367437/III/1> Metal strip is cleaned by passing it in a sloping path during which the upper surface is treated with a shower of a volatile solvent, and lower surface is washed with solvent collected from the shower. The strip enters the tank 1 through a slot 11 and passes over a pulley 7 downwards between pulleys 8, 9 and finally upwards over a pulley 10 to the exit slot 12. Trichlorethylene or similar volatile solvent 2 is boiled by a burner 4 in the jacket 3, and the vapour rises and is condensed by cooling coils 13, 14, to form a shower. The shower is collected in inclined trays 15 having gutters 19 forming a lip which is provided with a pad of felt 20 or other absorbent, which removes the condensed solvent from the strip. The exit slot 12 may be provided with a felt wiper. Specification 362,619 is referred to.
