Abstract

433,289. Cleaning metals. BUSSE, C., Sundwig, Iserlohn, Germany. Nov. 10, 1933, No. 31428. Void [Abridged as open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, May 11, 1934]. [Class 82 (ii)] [See also Group XIII] Wire or strip, after being pickled, is passed into a washing chamber in which it travels vertically upwards between cleaning devices such as brush or felt rollers. Water is supplied to both sides of the strip &c. by means of nozzles adjacent the top of the chamber and trickles down the material, forming a bath at the bottom of the chamber into which the material from the pickling tank is introduced. Neutralizing agents such as soda may be added to the washing water. Fig. 1 shows a plant for annealing, pickling, washing, and drying wire or strip. The strip 2 passes through an electrically or gas heated annealing furnace 1 into a water trough 3 separated by a partition 5 from a pickling tank 4. From the pickling tank the strip passes into a washing chamber 6 comprising a casing 9 surrounded by heat insulating material 12, such as cork plates. The strip passes through the accumulated water 6<1> at the bottom of the chamber and travels vertically upward between cleaning rolls 7 and is sprayed with water by means of nozzles 8 near the top of the chamber. Guide plates 10 are arranged beneath the cleaning rolls to direct the water removed by the rolls back to the strip. Soda solution is preferably supplied by nozzles 15 situated below the upper cleaning rolls. The strip passes from the chamber 6 to a drying chamber 13 mounted on the annealing furnace, and thence to coiling means 14. The water supplied to the nozzles 8 is preferably taken from the water trough 3 and the water accumulating at the bottom of the chamber 6 may be passed back to the trough 3 or may be passed through a heat-exchanger 11 which heats fresh water for the trough 3. Fig. 2 shows a pickling, washing, and drying plant, the washing chamber 6 being of similar construction to that shown in Fig. 1 but having mounted thereon squeezing rolls 20, e.g. of rubber, to remove liquid from the washed strip, and two heated drying drums 21.
