Abstract
Wax is separated from oil in a centrifuge, and its kinetic energy is used to withdraw it in a confined stream from the whirling zone, for instance, by means of a skimming tube with sharpened edges. The waxy oil is mixed with a solvent consisting of carbon tetrachloride <PICT:0446607/III/1> and dichlorethane, and cooled to precipitate the wax. It is then passed through the pipe 1 into the drum 8 of the centrifuge. The separated oil passes through the apertures 5 at the top of the drum wall, into the chamber 6 between the walls 8, 9, and discharges through the overflow tubes 7. The separated wax is carried by its kinetic energy through the tube 10 which can be adjusted along the surface or into the liquid by screws 12 in collars 13, 14. A washing fluid may be supplied through the pipe 4. To increase the fluidity of the wax, a solvent may be sprayed on it just before it enters the tube 10 or it may be heated after entering the tube. The inner wall 8 of the centrifuge may be covered with a filter blanket, so that the oil passes through it and the wax remains on it for removal mainly by the tube 10; the last layer of wax, however, is floated off by a heavy wash liquid and then removed by the tube 10.
