Abstract

<PICT:0460478/III/1> Oil used to absorb benzene from coal-distillation gases is reconditioned by washing the hot benzene-saturated oil with hot water, and separating by gravity while substantially at rest. Suitably, the oil at 70 DEG C. is fed through a pipe 5 and hot water under pressure through a pipe 9, the mixture passing down a pipe 4 and rising in a pipe 7 to a gravity separator 3; water rises in a bell 2 and overflows to an outlet 51; oil and heavier impurities overflow from the separator and sink in the bell 2, the impurities collecting at the bottom of a casing 1 and being withdrawn through a tube 16 and adjustable overflow 17, while the clean oil rises between the casing 1 and the bell 2 to an outlet 14. The hot water may be condensate from the oil heater; it may be introduced by a steam injector connected to an inlet 9; and it may raise the temperature of the oil to above 90 DEG C.
