Abstract
<PICT:0366071/III/1> <PICT:0366071/III/2> In regenerating used lubricating oil, the oil, after being warmed to cause settling out of water and suspended matters, is purified by mixing with sulphuric acid and the purified oil is filtered and heated with superheated steam to evaporate light boiling hydrocarbons contained in it. Used oil is supplied to a collecting vessel B provided with a cooling jacket 4. It is passed by a pump 2 to a vessel A fitted with a hot water jacket and is returned to the vessel B by a pipe 3 opening above the base. The oil is then forced through a pipe 5 into a vessel C fitted with a rotating stirrer 6 having a hollow vertical axis through which sulphuric acid is supplied from a vessel a. The treated oil is withdrawn from above the sludge by a pipe 8 having a readily adjustable union with a pipe leading to a filter D, fitted with a hot water jacket 9 and consisting of a bed of bleaching earth covered by a perforated plate d<3> supporting a layer of felt or asbestos d<4>, Fig. 2, to separate heavy particles. The plate carries one or more overflow pipes d<5> opening above the level of the inlet pipe. The filtered oil falls into a vessel E in which it is heated to about 150 DEG C. Vapours are condensed in a coil F<1> and the condensate is separated from water in a vessel J. The vessel E is heated by superheated steam circulated through heated tubes 10 and admitted by a pipe 11 and generated in an electrically heated boiler F and superheater G.
