Abstract
367,129. Sluice valves. HARTLEY, E., Kearsley Chambers, Shelton Old Road, Stoke-on-Trent. Jan. 19, 1931, No. 1787. [Class 135.] A sluice gate or penstock is forced against its seat, or against the guides on which it slides, by springs or other resilient devices supported by one or more crossbars. Figs. 2 and 3 show a circular gate 1, moved by a screw 2, with a cross-bar 8 set between lugs 9 on the back of the valve, and with its ends in the guides 6 at the sides of the valve. The bar contains in a boss 11 a spring 10, adjusted by a screw 12, such that the face of the gate is always kept on its seating, and on the guides on which it moves. In modifications, a rectangular valve is kept on its seating by two such springs; two bars 8 may be used ; a vertical lifting handle may be used instead of the screw 2, and this handle may be pivoted and set so as to vary the compression of a spring 10 between it and the back of the valve. In another modification, a counterweight is used instead of a spring 10, and is mounted on a bell-crank lever the inner part of which presses the valve up to its seat. In another modification, the lifting handle is in the form of a lever the lower end of which presses the valve against its seat ; the upper end of the handle moves in an outwardlypressed spring guide.
