365,757. Metal tins &c. STUCHBERY, A. L., 107, Ladysmith Road, Enfield, Middlesex, HUXLEY, J. H., 5A, Wetherby Mansions, South Kensington, and BRITISH SURE SEAL CO., Ltd., 132, Lots Road, Chelsea, both in London. Jan. 2, 1931, No. 241. [Class 125 (iii).] A vacuum-sealed metal container, such as a tin, for cigarettes, foodstuffs, &c., is provided with a hinged lid hermetically sealed to the container body. The lid is preferably provided with a channel 19 in which is positioned a sealing gasket 18 of rubber, cellulose acetate, &c., cotton seed pulp, or compressed cork, into which the smoothed top of the body bites. The hinge 15 is situated so that perforation of the walls of the container is not necessary, e.g. it may be formed by providing hinge-bearing members 12, 14, integral with the container body, by spot-welding the hinge-pin at its ends to the body and rolling an extension on the lid therearound, or by providing " bursts " or hinge-bearing members in a band welded to the body. To stiffen the container against collapse, the lid and body parts may be ribbed, stepped, &c., as at 22, 23, and a strut 24, which may be spot-welded or soldered into position, or a plurity of struts, may be inserted. A small hole 9 may be provided for the insertion of a pin &c. to break the vacuum to open the box. Fig. 19 shows a form in which hinge pins &c. are dispensed with, a depression 49 in a lug 47 of the lid, riding in a channel 50 on the body. In Fig. 21, bursts 54 are provided in the wall of the body to hold a hinge wire 55 which is soldered internally of the lid flange. The sealing gasket 18 is accommodated in a channel 53 in the container body; or, alternatively, the bursts may be provided in the lid flange, the gasket being then positioned as in Fig. 2.
