Abstract
<PICT:0365484/IV/1> Artificial filaments and films are made by dry-spinning a solution of a cellulose derivative or other like material into a vacuum chamber, the product being led out of the chamber through a liquid column of sufficient height to balance the pressure difference between the evacuated chamber and the outer atmosphere. The filaments or films undergoing evaporation may be carried on an endless band while a current of air or gas is led along said band. The evaporated solvent may be recovered, if desired, by condensation in a cold chamber connected with the evacuated chamber. In the Figure, an endless ribbon b supported by rollers c moves within the chamber a. A nozzle e discharges the spinning solution on to the ribbon b moving in a direction opposite to that of a current of drying atmosphere which enters the chamber a at g, passes in the direction of the arrows, and leaves at f. The film l leaves the ribbon b at m and passes out of the chamber by way of a mercury-filled tube n connected with a cup o. In Fig. 2 (not shown) the film l is supported during its descent through the mercury column by means of the endless ribbon b, and after separation of the film outside the chamber, the ribbon is returned.
