Abstract
An insulating layer is formed on metal by immersing the metal in a molten fluoride bath, the metal being withdrawn and allowed to cool in a non-oxidizing atmosphere. Copper wire may be treated in a bath of molten potassium fluoride and withdrawn and allowed p to cool in an atmosphere of carbon dioxide. It is stated that the insulating layer consists of a layer of the fluoride of the metal covered by a thin layer of the fluoride used as the bath. The coating may be effected electrolytically by passing a current through the metal and the fused salt.
