Abstract

363,485. Rotary engines. MENZIES, A. M., 11, Bannatyne Avenue, Dennistoun, Glasgow. Nov. 25, 1930, No. 35422. [Class 110 (ii).] A rotary engine has a hinged abutment k which acts as a non- return valve to admit steam through a port j to an annular space g to act on a piston d fixed to a rotor a. The exhaust steam passes through a port j<1>, and in the case of a multi-stage engine, as shown in Fig. 4, thence to a collecting tank m<1> before passing to the L.P. stage B. The engine may be reversible by being provided with two valves k, one only being used for one direction of rotation. In the H.P. stage A two inlet ducts n, or n<1>, which lead to ports covered by two flap valves, are controlled by a piston valve p<1> which admits steam to the space g from either steam chest r, r<1>. A slide valve s is operated by a spring- loaded push-rod t which is pressed downwards by a cam u on the shaft b. The cam u, not in use in Fig. 4, is slid along the shaft b. The main steam supply pipe q feeds pipes q<1>, q<2>. Each flap valve k is fixed on a cross rod w connected to a lever w<1> which is operated when the cams u, u<1> and valve p<1> are positioned to reverse the direction of motion. Similar control means are provided for the L.P. stage B or for any further stages.
