Starting-valves and starting-ports, auxiliary.- A steam or like engine cylinder is provided with supplementary starting-ports at the cylinder ends controlled by an auxiliary distributing-valve worked by an independent gear or partly or wholly by the main valve-gear. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the main valve 4 is operated from a centre 15, and the auxiliary valve 22 controlling the auxiliary ports 19, 20 from a centre 23. The valves operate at a different phase with respect to the crank. The valve 22 cuts off later than the main valve and preferably as the main valve opens to exhaust. In another construction, the auxiliary valve is arranged in the main chest by the side of the main valve and is operated by an intermediate point on a crosshead-operated combination lever connected to point 17, Fig. 1. Different auxiliary valve actions are obtained from different points on the combination lever. In the construction shown in Fig. 6 wherein an inside admission piston valve 4 is operated by a Walschaert gear, the auxiliary valve 22 is also of inside admission and is connected to a point 30 above or below the point 32 on the combination lever 29. As the main valve cui-off is progressively shortened, the auxiliary port closes earlier and finally does not open when the main valve is the sole control.
