Abstract

In the manufacture of ammonium chloride and sodium bicarbonate by the reaction of sodium chloride with ammonium bicarbonate or carbonate, liquid ammonia, which may contain a little water, is used as the reaction medium. The reaction may be carried out in a pressure vessel supplied with a stirrer and the precipitated sodium bicarbonate may be washed on a pressure filter with liquid ammonia the filtrate being evaporated to obtain ammonium chloride. The sodium bicarbonate is free from chlorine but contains small quantities of ammonia and carbamate; these are removed on calcination to sodium carbonate.
