[Class 98 (i).] A method of attaching the end flanges to the barrel of a spool of the type comprising a tubular central barrel and end discs secured thereon consists in shearing out a portion of each end disc so as to form a number of curved slots arranged in the form of an interrupted annular slot, turning over the outer edges of the slots in order to allow the end of the barrel to be slipped therethrough, and then forcing the turned-over edges of the slots back into the plane of the disc, thus gripping the barrel tightly and securing the end disc in position. A modification consists in forming in each disc a central hole of a diameter slightly less than the external diameter of the barrel, turning over the edges of the hole to allow the end of the barrel to be passed therethrough and then forcing the turnedover edge back to its original position in the plane of the disc so that it grips the barrel and secures the end disc in position. As shown in Figs. 1 and 3, three slots 3 in the form of an interrupted annular slot are sheared out of the end disc 2. A key slot 8 is also formed in the disc, and the edges of this slot are turned in. The end 5 of the barrel 1 is flared, and a key stop is comprised by a metal blank formed to have a flat portion 6 and a depressed portion 7. The three parts are then assembled and the outer edges 4 of the slots 3 forced back into their original positions in the plane of the end disc in order to grip the flared portion of the barrel tightly. In a modification, as shown in Fig. 5, a central hole of a diameter slightly less than the external diameter of the barrel is formed in each end disc 2, the edge 9 of the hole is turned over and the barrel 1 inserted, and finally the turned over edge 9 is forced back into the plane of the disc 2. The ends of the barrel may project to form stub spindles as shown, or may be flush with the end discs and have inserts provided with bearing-holes or key slots pressed therein.
