Abstract
362,709. Controlling change speed gearing. FORICHON, A., 70 bis, Avenue de Suffren, Paris. Dec. 30, 1930, No. 39229. Convention date, Dec. 30, 1929. Addition to 351,024. [Class 80 (ii).] The main patent comprises a two-speed epicyclic gear suitable for vehicles controlled by moving a friction clutch such as 10<1>, Fig. 1, by direct magnetic pull set up by an electric switch 29 operated by a governor 20 driven by the driving-shaft 1. Clutch 10<1> when attracted to electromagnet 3<1> effects a solid high-speed drive. Annulus 3 drives and the carrier 5 of the planets 4 is secured to driven shaft 6. According to this invention, sun gear 8 is prevented from turning backwards for the reduced speed by a brake. A sleeve 7, Figs. 1 and 2, extending from sun gear 8 carries a drum 111 adapted to be held by a brake band 11<2> normally held applied by a spring 42, the low speed being operative. The governor 20 in connecting switch 29, besides sending current from source 34 through coil 12<1>, Fig. 1, to attract clutch disc 10<1>, sends current through a solenoid 41, Fig. 2, which by attracting core 40 frees drum 11<1> from brake 11<2>, allowing solid driving. The governor control spring 25 is attached to the accelerator pedal 22. The gearing is disconnected at any time by depressing pedal 15 which mechanically disengages brake 11<2> and disconnects the battery 34 at 35. The solenoid for disengaging the brake is dispensed with in a described form by arranging between sleeve 7 and drum 11<1> a one-way device or detent. To operate the control switch 29, engine suction may be used as shown in Fig. 6 instead of the centrifugal governor. Suction in chamber 48 raises diaphragm 47 with a rod 50 carrying switch arm 51 against spring 52 acting through toggle 56. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes an arrangement practically identical with that of the main patent. It also describes an arrangement with no electromagnetic gear almost identical with the arrangement struck out from the main patent. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
