Abstract

351,024. Controlling change speed gearing; centrifugal governors. FORICHON, A., 70 bis, Avenue de Suffren, Paris. Jan. 13, 1930, No. 1219. Convention date, Jan. 12, 1929. [Class 80 (ii).] A two-speed epicyclic gear suitable for motor vehicles is controlled by moving a friction clutch 10 by direct magnetic pull which is set up by an electric switch operated by a governor driven by the driving shaft 1. The governor weights ware nearer their axis of rotation than are the pivots p of their supporting links 1, and act directly on a disc muff 25 against a spring 28 to close and open switch 27. This governor acts at different speeds according to whether the speed is increasing or decreasing. When switch 27 is open, clutch 10 is held by spring 11 against a brake cone 12. Sun gear 8a is then held fast, and shaft 7 is driven at reduced speed through planets 6, which it carries, rolling on gear 8a, being driven from internal gear 3a on member 3 carried by driving flywheel 2. When speed of shaft 1 rises, the governor closes switch 27 so as to make member 3 a magnet. This attracts cone 10 into engagement with its own coned surface 3b, so that the gearing turns solid at high speed. Depression of accelerator pedal 30 stresses further the governor control spring 28, so that the speed of the engine at which the automatic speed change takes place is increased. A pedal 35 is provided for disconnecting the drive at any time. It disconnects the low speed by directly moving cone 10 to neutral, and the high speed by breaking the electric circuit at 31 so that spring 11 returns cone 10 to neutral. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes an arrangement with no electromagnetic gear. The governor weights apply axial thrust directly to a disc flange on the sliding cone 10. This two-speed gear can be used to replace the usual clutch between the engine and the gearbox. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
