Abstract

483,214. Controlling motor vehicles. GUY, S. S., and AVERNS, R. DEAN-. Nov. 13, 1936, No. 27778/37. Divided out of 478,614. [Class 79 (v)] In a motor vehicle provided with an electric generator driven by the vehicle engine for purposes extraneous to the vehicle propulsion such as a searchlight, means are provided whereby the vehicle change - speed gear is rendered inoperative when the generator circuit is completed, and vice versa. In the construction shown the armature shaft 2 of the generator connects the engine 3 to the clutch 6 and change-speed gear so that the shaft 2 always rotates with the engine shaft. The change-speed gear is controlled by a gearlever 44 through a control shaft 32. The generator circuit is controlled by a switch 8 operated by a hand-lever 27 through a hollow shaft 35, arm 28 and link 29, the hand-lever having two positions determined by a quadrant 33. A second arm 30 on the shaft 35 rocks a locking plate 31 adapted, when in operative position, to prevent axial movement of the gear control shaft 32 from the neutral position. When the generator is to be used the vehicle is stopped, the gear-lever is placed in the neutral position, and the hand-lever 27 is moved to its second position to lock the gear control shaft 32 and close the switch 8. At the same time the engine throttle 13 is adjusted to provide a suitable engine speed when the generator is not under load. For this purpose a shaft 34, normally rotating with the shaft 35, carries an arm 36 forming an adjustable stop for a lever 16 connected to the throttle and the accelerator pedal 25, this stop determining the slow running position. The shaft 34 has a second arm 37 connected by an adjustable link 39 to a lever 38 mounted on the hand-lever 27 and bearing against a stop 41 which can be adjusted to regulate the running speed of the engine under " noload " conditions. When the generator is in use the engine speed is automatically controlled by a solenoid governor the circuit of which is completed simultaneously with the closing of the main switch 8.
