Abstract

472,619. Controlling and driving motor vehicles. VOITH, W., VOITH, H., and VOITH, H., (trading as VOITH, J. M., [Firm of]). Dec. 21, 1935, No. 35444. Void. Convention date, Dec. 24, 1934. [Classes 79 (ii) and 79 (v)] [Also in Group XXIX] In an hydraulic drive for motor vehicles comprising two speeds, at least one of which is through a torque converter, and the change from one speed to another is made automatically in accordance with the speed or torque, the critical speed or torque at which the automatic gear change takes place can be varied or preselected by the driver at will. The second speed may be through another torque converter, and hydraulic clutch, or an hydraulic controlled mechanical clutch. In the construction shown, the engine 1 drives the vehicle through hydraulic gear 4 comprising an hydraulic clutch and a torqueconverter. The gear 4 is controlled by a lever 5 operated by solenoids 15, 16 energized by a battery 9 through contact strips 14, 13 on a speedometer 7 driven from the vehicle axle 3. The contact strips are carried by a ring 19 rotatable on the speedometer by means of a handle 20. When the speedometer pointer 12 is on the strip 13, the solenoid 16 is energized, if a switch 11 is closed and the gear lever 5 is moved to the left to bring the torque converter into operation ; when the pointer 12 is on the strip 14 the solenoid 15 is energized, if a switch 10 is closed, and the gear lever 5 is moved to the right to cut out the torque converter and bring the hydraulic clutch into operation. As shown, the change-over occurs at a speed of 70, but by rotating the handle 20 the critical speed can be changed as desired. The switches 10, 11 are closed only when the accelerator pedal 6 is depressed so that no gear-change takes place, even if the speed has risen above or fallen below the critical speed, unless the pedal 6 is depressed and the throttle is therefore open. The gear-lever may be actuated by the speedometer by hydraulic, pneumatic, or mechanical means instead of electrical. If the gear-change is controlled by the torque, a dynamometer is used instead of the speedometer.
