Abstract

149,430. Glaser, W. H. May 13, 1919. Speed-maintaining systems.-A governor for controlling the uniform or variable, motion of a member 14 comprises a rotating body consisting preferably of two parts 27, 28, mounted on a shaft 12 which carries one element 49 of a differential' gear, another element 15 being connected to the member 14, while the planet wheel 50 is connected by a. frame 52, a double pawl 54, a. ratchetwheel 58, and switch arm 72 to the switch controlling the motor driving the member 14. The wheel 27, 28 is driven by a wheel 16 through an electro-magnetic clutch 22, 21 connected to the wheel 16 and loosely mounted on the shaft 12, so that, when the coil 22 is energized by means of the slip-rings 23, 34, the member 17 is drawn into contact with the member 27 and drives the members 27, 28 through a friction ring 21. If the speed of the wheel 27, 28 exceeds the normal, balls 31 move outwards and move the member 28 axially, thereby breaking the circuit of the coil 22 and allowing the spring 19 to move the member 17 out of contact with the member 27. If an accelerated motion is to be copied by the member 14, the ring 21 is made of material that allows a certain amount of slip between the members 17 and 27. If a retarded motion is to be copied, a coil 41 in a slidable member 40 is energized so as to move the friction ring 47 against an armature 39 connected to the member 28, and thereby brake the latter. Specification 149,731 is referred to.
