Abstract

362,568. Friction clutches ; operating clutches. BRADFORD, G. H., BRADFORD, R., BRADFORD, R. P., and BRADFORD, W., 752, High Road, Tottenham, London. Sept. 29, 1930, No. 29038. [Class 80 (ii).] A friction clutch is disposed in the interior of one of a pair of geared wheels contained in a casing on one face of which are fixed inclines which impart a longitudinal movement to a rotary cam member to bring a frictional pressure to bear on the clutch plates. Plates 24 engaging the square hollow within a worm wheel 25, alternate with plates 26 mounted on the square end of a sleeve 14. A cam 27 having inclines 4 engaging fixed inclines 3 on the casing 2 is adapted to apply pressure to the plates when rotated by a rod 10 having a lug engaging a recess in a projection 7 of the cam. The rod 10 may be connected to a control liner which may be moved beyond its dead centre position to remain in engaged position. For this purpose the rod may be broken and connected together by means of a sleeve housing a piston with a spring on one part while a cap on the sleeve is connected to the other part. The driven shaft 11 is connected by a dog clutch 12 to the sleeve 14. Rotation of the worm is transmitted by worm wheel 25, the clutch 24, 26 and the dog clutch 12 to the shaft 11. The worm wheel 25 is bolted to a flange 17 on a sleeve 13. The sleeves 13, 14 have a spigot connection 19 and carry the two halves of the casing. The sleeve 14 is provided with a thrust collar 15. Thrust bearings 16, 18 are provided between the cam 27 and the clutch plates and between the flange 17 and this casing 2. Rotation of worm wheel is in such direction as to tend to keep inclines 3, 4 engaged. The clutch may be applied to a central shaft, e.g. the axle of a cultivator and the shaft varied in length by varying the setting of the dog clutch 12 thereon.
