Abstract

304,394. Kingsmill, H. L. Oct. 28, 1927. Universal joints; linkwork. - A universal or like coupling, allowing axial and lateral displacements and applicable particularly to electric locomotive driving gears, comprises an intermediate member antifrictionally pivoted diametrically on one of the parts to be coupled and connected to the other part through anti-friction thrust members arranged in pairs comprising opposed members on opposite sides of the axial plane passing through said pivotal diameter. In one form, Figs. 1 and 3, the arms C<2> of an H-shaped intermediate member are trunnioned at one end C' in diametrical ball bearings A<3> on the web A of an electric locomotive driving wheel and, at the other end C<3>, are connected to the web B of a motor driven gear wheel through thrust members D. The outer ends D<2> of the thrust members are rounded to roll on hardened steel discs E held in place in the web B by screwed rings E' with lock nuts B', whilst the inner ends D' roll on spherical bosses C<5> formed on discs C' secured on seats C<8> in the arm ends C<3> by screwed sleeves C<6>. The sleeves or rings E<1>, C<6> and a similar ring C' serve as guide or retaining rings for the thrust members D. In a modification (Figs. 4 and 5, not shown), an axially disposed cylindrical intermediate member pivoted at one end on ball or roller bearings carried by diametrical trunnions on one shaft end is, at the other end, provided with internal abutments, spherically ended thrust members being interposed between such abutments and other abutments or seatings carried by diametrically opposed arms on the other shaft end.
