Abstract

430,226. Universal joints. HARDY, SPICER, & CO., Ltd., Birch Road, Witton, Birmingham. Dec. 7, 1934, No. 35176. Convention date, May 4. [Class 80 (ii)] A double universal joint has driving and driven forks connected respectively to an intermediate yoke by coupling members and is positioned by ball-and-socket means one member of which is slidable with respect to its associated fork. The joint is of general application but is described in connection with the front wheel drive of a motor vehicle. The driving shaft 11 terminates in a fork 12 co-planar with a fork 13 on the driven shaft 14. Between the forks is a yoke 15 formed with a pair of arms 16, Fig. 4, to be connected to fork 12, and a pair 17 to be connected to fork 13. The connection is effected by coupling members 18, Fig. 2. Each of the arms 12, 13, 16, 17 has a hole in which is inserted a thimble 19, held in position by a spring ring 20, and engaging its trunnion 21 through roller bearings 22. The trunnions have an oil reservoir at 28. The space containing the rollers is enclosed by a flexible annular seal 24 with interposed cork packing 25. To take the weight of and position the joint, shafts 27, 28 are provided, the shaft 27 carrying a slidable ball 29 coacting with a socket 30 fast on the shaft 23. When the shafts are aligned, the centre of the ball is on the line 31 slightly off-set from the centre line of the yoke, but when the steerable wheel is locked fully over and the driving and driven shafts at their maximum inclination, the centre of the ball will be substantially coincident with that of the yoke. To ensure efficient lubrication, the ball-and-socket device is enclosed in a casing 34 made in parts relatively slidable and provided with annuli 35 coacting with ball portions 36 on the shafts 27, 28 a felt or other packing 37 being provided outside each annulus. One of the ball portions, e.g. that on the shaft 28 is slidable and loaded by a spring 38.
