Abstract

848,178. Universal joints. ANCIENS ETABLISSEMENTS PANHARD & LEVASSOR, S.A., DES. Nov. 6, 1958 [Nov. 27, 1957], No. 35717/58. Class 80 (2). A gear type universal joint for front wheel drive motor vehicles shown in Fig. 4 as a double joint permitting 45 degrees angularity with constant velocity ratio, comprises a nylon or other plastic sleeve 8 having internal teeth which engage teeth 6, 7 on hubs connected one to a coupled shaft, the other to an intermediate member 11. In the double joint shown the hubs 5 are centred on the respective shafts 2, 13 by spherical joints 4, whilst the shafts themselves are centred by a sliding spherical joint 12. In the single joint, Fig. 1 (not shown), which permits 20 to 25 degrees angularity, the hubs are directly secured to the coupled shafts which are centred by a single spherical joint 4. The gear teeth 6 ... 8 which may be shaped, Fig. 3 (not shown), to make surface contact, allow a slight distortion of the sleeve 8 during high angular deflections. Axial movement of the sleeve is limited by end flanges on the sleeve 8 or on a surrounding casing 15 which does not interfere with radial movement of the sleeve. Radial expansion of the sleeve may be prevented by an inner spring sleeve 10. A flexible bellows 19 connect the casings 15.
