Description
IMPROVED TOOTHED COUPLING FOR TRANSMITTING MOTION BETWEEN TWO
SHAFTS
The present invention relates to an improved toothed coupling for transmitting motion between two shafts. Articulated couplings in general allow mechanical connection, for motion transmission, between shafts which are not coaxial and have, for example, parallel axes which do not coincide or axes which are not parallel but are incident.
With an appropriate combination of articulated couplings it is also possible to transmit motion between shafts whose axes are neither parallel nor incident. A type of articulated coupling which is used extensively in all heavy-duty situations, such as shafts of steam turbines, propeller shafts, rolling mills, et cetera, is the toothed coupling, in which the hubs, supported by the two shafts, are provided with peripheral sets of teeth. The corresponding internal sets of teeth of the bell that connects the two hubs engage such peripheral sets of teeth. The sets of teeth can be shaped like slotted profiles or can have a barrel-shaped profile, so as to allow angles of 2-3° between the shafts.
Toothed couplings have great load-bearing capacities, but they are affected by drawbacks, including the need for careful maintenance, especially as regards internal lubrication. The aim of the present invention is to provide a coupling which has self-lubricating characteristics.
An object of the present invention is to provide a coupling which has modular characteristics which allow quick and easy maintenance and replacement of its consumable components. A further object is to provide a toothed coupling which can be manufactured at competitive production costs.
This aim and these and other objects, which will become better apparent hereinafter, are achieved by an improved toothed coupling for transmitting motion between two shafts, comprising a hub and two annular external bodies, each of said bodies being coupled to the end of a respective shaft, characterized in that it comprises a sealing
means which retains lubricant at least in the region comprised between said hub and said external bodies.
Further characteristics and advantages of the invention will become better apparent from the description of preferred but not exclusive embodiments thereof, illustrated by way of non-limiting example in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of a toothed coupling according to the invention;
Figure 2 is an exploded perspective view of the toothed coupling according to the present invention. With reference to the cited figures, a toothed coupling according to a preferred embodiment of the invention, generally designated by the reference numeral 1, comprises a hub 2, which is constituted by a substantially cylindrical body provided with two radial sets of teeth, designated respectively by the reference numerals 3 and 4.
The coupling has two external bodies, designated respectively by the reference numerals 5 and 6, each of which can be associated with a respective shaft 105 and 106. Each external body is constituted by a ring, which rotates rigidly with the hub 2 owing to the presence of internal sets of teeth, designated respectively by the reference numerals 7 for the external body 5 and 8 for the external body 6, which are suitable to engage the respective radial sets of teeth 3 and 4 of the hub 2. Each internal set of teeth 7 and 8 allows the teeth of the respective radial sets of teeth 3 and 4 to slide along a longitudinal axis which is parallel to the rotation axis of the external body 5, 6.
Each external body 5, 6 comprises flanges 12 which are provided with axial threaded holes 13, which can be engaged by screws 14 for connecting flanges 155 and 166 of the respective shafts 105 and 106.
Contoured plates 16 are applied to the ends of the central body 2 and have an external camber which rests against a respective disk 9 which is associated with the end of each external body 5 and 6.
According to the invention, a gasket 17 is applied around the two external bodies 5 and 6 and is substantially constituted by a ring made of elastic material, such as rubber,
metal, or both rubber and metal, which is suitable to provide a seal between the external bodies, isolating the central body 2 with respect to the outside.
In this manner, in the internal region 19 formed by the external bodies 5 and 6 and by the gasket 17 it is possible to insert lubricant, for example of the type used in bearings. The disks 9 help to isolate the internal parts of the coupling from the outside.
The lubricant can be inserted in the coupling by means of lubrication means constituted for example by a lubrication duct closed by a greasing device.
In practice it has been found that the invention achieves the intended aim and objects, an improved toothed coupling with self-lubricating characteristics having been provided which is capable of coupling non-coaxial shafts, ensuring effective motion transmission.
An advantage of the coupling according to the present invention is that it requires substantially reduced maintenance with respect to traditional couplings having a similar performance, especially as regards lubrication. The coupling according to the invention is susceptible of numerous modifications and variations, within the scope of the appended claims. All the details may be replaced with technically equivalent elements.
The materials used, as well as the dimensions, may be any according to requirements and to the state of the art.
