Abstract

945,901. Motor vehicle driving gear. BIRFIELD ENGINEERING Ltd. Aug. 1, 1962 [Aug. 3, 1961], No. 28182/61. Heading B7H. [Also in Division F2] A driving shaft 9 for an independently suspended vehicle wheel is mounted between universal joints 1 and 2 and a splined coupling is interposed between the outboard universal joint 2 and the vehicle wheel hub 13. Each universal joint is of the constant velocity type and comprises concentric spherical members 3, 4 with balls 8 operating in grooves 7, the inboard joint having a flange 10 for coupling to the drive. The outboard universal joint has an extension shaft 12 provided with elliptical grooves 17, Fig. 2, having bearing faces at 45 degrees for sets of balls 14 which drivingly connect the shaft 12 with a complementarily grooved portion 17 of the vehicle hub. The hub rotates in bearings 15 which may be mounted in a steerable pivot member suspended in pivot arms of unequal length. Bearing bushes 24 may be interposed between the hub 17 and parts 23 and 22 of the shaft 12 of unequal diameter as shown in the upper half of Fig. 1, or of equal diameter as shown in the lower part, the bearing for the inner part 27 being radially split to facilitate assembly. The balls 17 are retained by stop rings 20 and inner and outer lubricant seals 25 and 26 are provided. In a modification, Fig. 3, bearing bushes 24 of equal diameter are provided upon a cylindrical portion of shaft 12 and a sleeve 28 press fitted thereon. A lubricant retaining cap 29 is provided in the hub.
