843,754. Shaft couplings; universal joints. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Dec. 10, 1958 [Dec. 30, 1957; Sept. 24, 1958], No. 39813/58. Class 80 (2). [Also in Groups XXXI and XXXII] In a vehicle driven road-wheel suspension (see Group XXXII), a joint in the drive shaft 64 is arranged to develop an axial thrust in the shaft in proportion to changes in braking or acceleration torque. In Figs. 3 and 4, the drive shaft 64 is formed with interengaging male and female respective portions 104, 100. A transverse pin 114 rigid with the portion 104 carries needle-roller mounted sleeves 122 which engage helically disposed tracks 108 formed in the female portion 100. Instead of the tracks 108 being of helical formation they may be machined as straight surfaces and disposed at an inclination to the axis of the shaft 64. In the construction shown in Figs. 8 to 10, the female portion 100 is formed with radially inwardly projecting portions 124, 126, which interfit with helical disposed grooves in the portion 104. Needle bearing rollers n are supported in an elongated loop cage 134 for antifriction action. In the construction of Figs. 12 and 15, the above-described joint is combined in a universal joint. The portion 104 of the shaft 64 carries radial projections 252, 252, on which are mounted respective rollers 250 with the interposition of needle roller bearings 254. A bearing cap 258 is also mounted in each projection 252. The bearing cap 258 and the roller 250 in respect of each projection 252 engages a helically disposed recess formed in the portion 100. There is a dirt-excluding boot 270.
