Abstract
932,571. Bearings &c. ROVER CO. Ltd. Oct. 16, 1961 [Nov. 26, 1960], No. 40733/60. Class 12 (1). A bearing assembly for the front wheel of a vehicle comprises a hub 1 which forms the outer casing of a universal joint 2. A nut 4 abuts the hub 1 and together they define a circumferential groove 7. A ring 8 with radially inwardly extending rib 10 is located, with radial and axial clearance, within the groove 7. The annular spaces formed between circumferential and side faces of the rib 10 and the groove 7 are occupied by cylindrical roller bearings 15 and needle rollers 18 respectively, which may be located in cages 12 and 18 respectively. The rollers 15 form a journal bearing portion of the assembly and the needle rollers 18 form thrust bearings, the co-operating bearing raceways or surfaces of these assemblies being suitably hardened and ground. In order to obtain particular axial operating tolerances between the relatively moving parts of the assembly, nuts 4 are provided with different axial dimensions, a suitable nut being selected to correspond with the tolerances required.
