[Class 131.] In curling tongs heated by an electric resistance in one limb thereof, the circuit to the resistance is controlled by a thermostatic switch, means being provided to control the temperature at which the switch becomes operable. As shown, the limb 1 of the tongs is provided with an inner tube 2 of zinc or other metal having a high co-efficient of expansion lined with insulating material 3. Mounted in the upper end of the tube 2 is a rod 4 of quartz-glass or like material having a low co-efficient of expansion on which is wound a heating resistance 5. Secured to the end of the rod 4 is a boss 6 of iron or other electricallyconductive material to which the resistance 5 is connected, the boss having a screwthreaded engagement with a sleeve 7 carrying a disc 11. A spring-loaded pin 8 provided with a flange 9 is mounted within the sleeve 7, and carries a contact 10 adapted to engage with an adjustable insulated contact 16 bearing on an insulated spring 17 connected to a lead 18. The contact 16 is carried by a screw 14 the head 20 of which is provided with indicating marks 19 for use in conjunction with a pointer 21. In use, as the temperature rises and the tube 2 expands relatively to the rod 4, the contacts 10, 16 remain in engagement until the flange 9 abuts against the disc 11, whereupon the contacts 10, 16 separate and the circuit is broken. By adjusting the screw 14, the temperature at which the circuit is broken may be controlled. In modifications, (1) the tube 2 forms the limb of the tongs, the tube 1 being dispensed with, and (2)' the switch comprises a bimetallic spring strip housed within the limb of the tongs.
