Abstract

452,562. Thermal switches. SAUNDERS, N. F. T., Rowardennan, St. Martins Approach, Ruislip, BARNES, N., 12, St. Mary's Walk, Hayes, and MUDGE, F. J., 86, Pole Hill Road, Hillingdon, all in Middlesex. March 19, 1935, Nos. 2593/36 (divided out of 447,442) and 22085/35. [Class 38 (v)] [See also Group XI] The knob 30 for adjusting the temperature at which a thermal switch for opening and closing the heating circuit of an electric handiron operates, extends through the rear wall of the iron at a point behind the handle. The connection between one end of the heating resistance and one of the supply terminals is broken, one wire being connected to a metal strip 10 clamped at one end and insulated from a bridge 8 secured within the iron and the other wire is connected to another metal strip 11 similarly anchored. The strip 10 is formed with a bent-over free end 10<1> carrying a contact 15<1> which normally engages a contact on the strip 11, the free ends of the strips 10, 11 being biassed downwardly and upwardly respectively. A bimetallic strip 3 is anchored in a recess 2 in the sole plate 1 of the iron and its free end rises as the temperature increases and engages an insulated stud 14 on the strip 10 to open the circuit. The operating temperature is controlled by a cam 26 which limits the upward movement of the strip 11. The cam is secured to a shaft 25 rotatable in a bracket 22 secured to the bridge 8 and the shank 31 of the knob 30 is formed with a longitudinal groove in which a spring fixed to a collar 27 fast on the shaft 25 engages.
