[Class 28 (i).] In an electric hot-plate for cooking purposes, or in waffle irons, the increase in the dimensions of the plate consequent on the plate rising to a predetermined temperature is utilized to interrupt the heating circuit. As shown in Fig. 1 the hot plate 1, which is made of a material having a high coefficient of expansion, is heated by an element 2 preferably having two windings, i.e., a high resistance winding giving just sufficient heat to maintain the temperature of the plate, and a low resistance winding which is brought into and cut out of the circuit to supply the additional heat to effect cooking. A rod 3 of non-expanding metal, e.g., that known by the Registered Trade Mark " Invar," is secured at one end to a lug 4 at one end of the plate 1. The other end of the rod 3 is freely movable in a depending lug 5 and carries a bracket 6 having an adjusting screw 7 which bears on the arm 9 of a switch 8 of which the lug 5 forms the base. The arm 9 is pivoted in the bracket 10 and is spring loaded in such manner that the contacts are closed when the plate is cold. In a modification, Fig. 3, the member 3 is in the form of a bent strip which is looped under a pin 12 connected to the bracket member 6 of the switch. In Fig. 3, the invention is applied to waffle irons, the movement of the switch 8 being arranged to light a lamp 18 or to energize a bell or buzzer to give warning of the completion of the cooking. The switch used may be that described in Specification 305,077, [Class 38 (v)]. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 354,282, [Group XXXVII].
