Abstract

<PICT:0361124/III/1> <PICT:0361124/III/2> A miner's safety lamp for indicating the presence of fire-damp has a casing 1 of flat cross section, with air inlet openings covered with wire gauze 3 and a glazed observation opening 2 adjacent the flame, containing a hydrocarbon burner 16 and a dry battery 17 for lighting the burner by means of an incandescent wire 24. The casing comprises a sleeve closed at its ends by caps 4, 5 the upper cap 5 having gauze-covered perforations and being locked by a pin 7 and a catch 8 releasable only from inside the casing. The lower cap 4 carries by supports 15 the cylindrical fuel container 16 to which is fixed the burner tube 19, and a magnetic catch 12 fixed to the casing 1, takes over a pin 10 on the fuel container when the parts are assembled. An iron plate 13 on the outside of the casing acts as a pole shoe for the opening magnet. On the other side the cap 4 is held by a guide 14 which engages the casing. The dry battery 17 is placed between the supports 15 and has one pole 31 in contact with the fuel container and thus with one holder 25 of the incandescent wire 24 which is adapted to be lowered for igniting the burner and raised into the flame for testing the air of the mine and is mounted between the holder 25 and an insulated holder 26 on a slidable carrier 27 passing through the lower closing cap 4 and provided with a handle 29. A spring 30 normally retains the carrier in its upper position and when it is lowered an extension 33 of the insulated holder 26 contacts with the other pole 32 of the battery closing the circuit. The wick is adjusted by a rod 21 and screw 23 mounted in the lower closing cap.
