Abstract
360,689. Laundry t a g - o p e n i n g - machines. AMERICAN LAUNDRY MACHINERY CO., Norwood Station, Cincinnati, Ohio, U.S.A. Nov. 22, 1930, No. 35182. Convention date, Feb. 24. [Class 73.] A machine for opening metal clips such as laundry tags, for the inser tion and removal o: goods comprises a fixed member for engaging one leg of the clip, and a movable member for engaging the other leg, the latter being carried by a floating element which moves forwardly tc engage the clip and then tilts to open it; selective means are provided whereby only clips of a predetermined identity can be placed in the clip opening position. The clips are threaded upon a pivoted rod 66, Fig. 1, having wards whereby only clips having corresponding slots may be threaded thereon, and the rod is then moved to the position shown in Fig. 5. A pedal 10 is then depressed causing a member 26 with cam slots 30, 31 therein to actuate a sliding member 35 and a bell crank 44 respectively. The sliding member 35 has an extension 38 which engages a pivoted member 37, the upper part of which engages the clip to cause a socket 33 thereon to engage a fixed projection 32 and to move the clip into place under a nose 40 on the slide 35. The other clip-engaging member 34 is mounted on the spring-influenced end 41 of the floating member 42 which is pivoted to parallel links 44, 46, the former forming one arm of the bell crank actuated by the slide 26. During the first part of its motion, the link moves forwardly with an approximately parallel motion to bring the member 34 into engagement with the upper leg of the clip; as the link 44 passes its dead-centre, the forward end 41 is tilted upwards to open the clip to permit the insertion or removal of the goods. To prevent the actuation of the cam member 26 unless a clip is in position, a pivoted stop member 55 is provided which is connected by a link 58 with an arm 60 on the rod 66 so as to be moved to an inoperative position when the rod 66 is moved inwardly; the stop 55 engages a fixed abutment 57 on which is provided an adjustable stop 70 controlling the stroke of the cam member 26 ; the return of the pedal 10 is controlled by a second stop 71. A guard 54, serving as a guide for the insertion of the clips, is adjustably supported on the floating bar 42. To ensure correct placing of the clips, an arm 68 is provided, integral with the link 46, and having a lateral extension 69 which engages the top of the rod 66 and stops the machine if the rod is incorrectly placed.
