Abstract

359,883. Reducing surface friction. KRUCKENBERG, F. and STEDEFELD, C., 20, Georgsplatz, Hanover, Germany. June 18, 1931, No. 17724. Convention date, June 28, 1930. [Class 4.] To increase the uniformity of the airstream past the propellers of aircraft and propeller-driven high speed vehicles, the turbulent layer of air caused by asymmetrical parts of the body is sucked through surface openings and discharged outside the propeller stream. Figs. 7 and 8 show a reversible high speed railway vehicle having a spindleshaped body 10 and a fairing 12, for covering the wheels, connected together by a fin 13. When a propeller 14 is used as a tractor, air is sucked by a blower either through openings 24 in the side of the fin or, preferably, through openings 25 in the front of the fin, and discharged through a passage 21 provided with guide blades 28, 29. When the propeller 14 is used as a pusher, the openings 25 are closed by shutters 27 and air is sucked through the openings 24. In this case the lower blades 28 are closed over the blades 29 to form rearwardly directed bi-convex guide blades. Alternatively two discharge openings 21, 30 may be provided and a flap 31 adapted to be swung over when the vehicle is reversed. A vehicle having a pusher propeller also is described in which the sucked in air after passing over a radiator or condenser to cool the engine, is discharged through an opening beneath or in the rear edge of the fairing 12.
