Abstract

358,209. Lap forming apparatus. PLATT BROS. & CO., Ltd., Hartford Works, WILKINSON, H., 500, Ripponden Road, and ROE, A., 376, Ripponden Road, Barrowshaw, both in Oldham. Aug. 23, 1930, No. 25215. [Class 120 (i).] Slip rolls on which laps are wound as in exhaust - opener lap machines, cylinder - opener lap machines, scutcher lap machines, &c., are uniformly "weighted" by means of adjustable dead weights on the rack bars, the latter, as the lap is built up, operating through a gear train to overcome a frictional force which holds the rack bars in any desired position. The rack bars can also be lifted higher for doffing the laps by means of a hand-wheel which operates through the gear train. A slip rod r is held by guided rack bars 1 which are separately and equally loaded or have, at their lower ends, slotted brackets to hold between them weights 4 in the form of bars notched at the ends. The teeth on the rack bars engage with pinions 6 keyed on a shaft 5 which also supports a sleeve 7 to which are keyed a pinion 8, a friction wheel 9, and a hand-wheel 10. The remainder of the gear train connecting the pinions 6, 8 consists of a pinion 17, compound pinion 14, and pinions 11, 13, keyed on the same shaft. The rack bars are raised for the removal of a completed lap by turning the hand-wheel 10 which operates through the gear train, and the rack bars are held in the raised position by a brake block 22 acting on the wheel 9. The brake block is in engagement with the wheel 9 while the lap is being wound and also while the rack bars are being raised. When the brake block is released by pressing on a treadle lever 18, the gear train allows the rack bars to run down slowly. The lever 18 is pivoted at 19 and carries an adjustable weight 20.
