Abstract
592,978. Sliver-balling apparatus. TAGGART, T. C. Oct. 12, 1944, No. 19702. Convention date, July 12. [Class 120 (i)] A sliver roll forming machine with a rollforming drum rotatable by pressure contact with driving means and mounted to move bodily as the size of the roll increases has flexible connections from the drum to means imposing pressure on the sliver by resisting bodily movement of the drum and a counterweight for returning the flexible connections to a reset position upon release of the means resisting bodily movement of the drum. Several slivers brought together at the rollers 100, 101 of the drawing frame are combined and passed through a conductor D, made of metal, plastic or other suitable material, having side walls to control the width of the sliver and being detachably connected to guide walls of the roll former (one of which is shown at 33) which may be spaced apart varying distances. The sliver roll is formed on a drum B, through which is passed a shaft having enlarged ends to receive links 13. A chain 121, and a corresponding chain on the other side of the machine, are coupled to the links 13 and wound partially round wheels on a shaft 111 geared to a shaft 112 carrying a brake wheel 130 against which a brake band 144 is held by a weight 142. The gear ratio between the shafts 111, 112 may be altered to vary the braking action and the weight 142 may be replaced by a smaller or a greater one. A foot lever 147 is arranged to allow the braking pressure on the wheel 130 to be released. When the roll has reached a predetermined size additional braking pressure may be applied by means of a weighted lever 170 releasable by a detent 190 by a trip member 200 adjustably secured to the side of the brake wheel 130. A counter-weight 157 is connected to a wheel 150, keyed to the shaft 111, in order to reset the load applying mechanism at the completion of a roll when the foot lever 147 is operated and the links 13 are removed from the shaft ends 12.
