Abstract
358,073. Coils for dynamo-electric machines. CULLIN, J. F., 440, St. Clair Avenue, Detroit, Michigan, U.S.A. May 27, 1930, No. 16371. [Class 35.] An armature coil is substantially rectangular and the end portions have a cross section in the form of an elongated quadrilateral, the long dimension of which lies substantially in the plane of the coil. The object of the invention is to permit the coil ends to be accommodated at the ends of the core without the necessity of flattening them after the insertion of the coils in the slots. The coil is wound so that all cross sections are elongated, for example, the cross section of the sides and the outer end are elongated in the ratio 5 : 2, Fig. 3, and the cross section at the commutator end in the ratio 4: 2, Fig. 4. The coil is made of a number of turns of a pair of wires one of which is shown shaded and the other unshaded, and the wires are wound in the order af, bg, ch, di, and ej, and crossed over so that the final cross section is as in Fig. 3. The connecting leads are arranged on the inner face of the coil so that they do not have to cross the depth of the slot. The completed coils are dish shaped so that they nest in each other.
