Abstract

Sulphonated fatty acid esters are prepared by esterifying with a monohydric alcohol in the presence of an esterification catalyst, e.g. an acid or an acid salt, a neutralized sulphonation product of an unsaturated or hydroxy fatty acid. In an example, oleic acid is sulphonated, neutralized, and after evaporation is mixed with methyl alcohol. The methyl ester of sulphonated hydroxystearic acid is obtained by acidifying with sulphuric acid or zinc chloride and allowing to stand for 24 hours. The ethyl ester may similarly be obtained. The products have high wetting power. Specifications 313,160 and 313,966, [both in Class 2 (iii), Dyes &c.], are referred to.
