Abstract

Wetting-agents are manufactured by reacting organic sulphonic acids or acid sulphuric esters having wetting power per se and containing either an aliphatic radicle containing at least 12 carbon atoms or an aromatic radicle substituted by aliphatic side chains containing at least 3 carbon atoms, or their salts, with salts of quaternary ammonium bases having attached to the pentavalent nitrogen atom, either directly or through a bridge consisting of an ether, ester or carboxylic acid amide group, a straight or branched chain aliphatic or cycloaliphatic radicle of 5 to 11 carbon atoms or an araliphatic radicle containing either a single aliphatic residue of 5 to 11 carbon atoms or two or more aliphatic residues having a total of 5 to 11 carbon atoms, the other radicles attached to the pentavalent nitrogen atom being either short aliphatic or heterocyclic residues. Suitable organic sulphonic acids and acid sulphuric esters are alkylated aromatic sulphonic acids and sulphonation products of unsaturated fatty acids or hydroxy fatty acids or preferably of their derivatives in which the carboxylic acid group is protected by esterification or amidation. In examples: (1) a sulphonation product of oleic acid diethylamide is reacted with the ammonium salt prepared by reacting trimethylamine with 2 : 4-diisopropylbenzyl chloride; similar products are obtained if in the preparation of the ammonium salt the diisopropylbenzyl chloride is replaced by triisopropylbenzyl chloride, or the trimethylamine by pyridine or methylpiperidine; (2) the sodium salt of the sulphuric ester of hydroxystearic acid (obtained by sulphonating oleic acid) is mixed in aqueous solution with an ammonium salt obtained by reacting benzenesulphochloride and an excess of trimethylamine with n-octanol; (3) sulphonated ricinoleic acid butyl ester is reacted with an ammonium salt obtained by condensing chloracetic acid isoheptyl ester with trimethylamine; (4) the sodium salt of the dibutylated naphthalene-sulphonic acid prepared as described in example 1 of Specification 246,817, [Class 2 (iii)], is warmed with isoheptyltrimethylammonium methosulphate (obtained by peralkylating isoheptylamine with dimethyl sulphate). Samples have been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of products obtained by the interaction of the following compounds: (I) the sodium salt of dibutylated naphthalenesulphonic acid (as in (4) above), and cyclohexyltrimethylammonium methosulphate (obtained by peralkylating cyclohexylamine with dimethyl sulphate); (II) the sulphuric ester from oleic acid dimethylamide, and the ammonium salt obtained by reacting octyl chloromethyl ether with trimethylamine; (III) the sodium salt of the sulphuric ester of hydroxystearic acid (as in (2) above), and an ammonium salt obtained by reacting chloracetylisoheptylamine with trimethylamine.
