Abstract
355,983. Flame igniters ; starting. FUEL CONVERSION APPLIANCES PROPRIETARY, Ltd. and ROBERTSON, E. C., 366, Bourke -Street, Melbourne, Australia. Sept. 23, 1930, No. 28448. [Classes 7 (iv) and 7 (v).] A main charge of air and crude oil is ignited by a flame produced by the ignition of an auxiliary charge of mixture containing light fuel, in a chamber connected to the cylinder by a passage-way which is closed by a valve during the induction stroke of the engine. A sparking plug is located at 9 in a chamber 8 into which the auxiliary charge is drawn through a passage 7, the chamber being connected to the cylinder by a passage 13 and orifices 15. A valve 12 seats at 11 on the end of the passage 13 during the induction stroke, when the combustion products are withdrawn from the chamber 8 through the orifices 15 and a fresh light fuel charge is induced. During compression, the valve closes on a seat 23 cutting off the light fuel mixture. At starting and when idling, the valve 11 is held midway between the seats by a collar held against the valve stem by a lever 25 actuated by a Bowden wire, and the engine then runs on light fuel mixture. The orifices 15 may be formed by grooves in the valve seat.
