[Class 136 (i).] A spare wheel carrier, more particularly for heavy motor vehicles, comprises a plate 4, adapted to turn about a horizontal hinge pin 3 on a plate 2 secured to the side member 1 of the chassis, and a second plate 5 adapted to support the spare wheel 7, as by means of a pin 6, clamping-plate 8, and locking-nut 9, and pivoted to the plate 4 on a fulcrum pin 10 eccentric to the pin 6, the plates 4, 5 being adapted to be locked together, as by a spring-urged bolt 11, and moved from a vertical position into a horizontal position beneath the chassis, in which position the wheel 7 is held in a support 14 carried by angle brackets 15 from the chassis member 1a, and from which the plates and wheel can be moved back into the vertical position for removal of the wheel, the arrangement being such that the wheel is at all times supported by the carrier until it is brought into contact with the ground. The bolt 11 slides in guides 12 on the plate 4 and normally engages a lug 5a on the plate 5, and it is adapted to be withdrawn by means of a knob, finger ring, &c. 11a and then held by rotating it to engage a projection on it with one of the guides 12. The plate 5 and wheel 7 can then be rotated about the eccentric pin 10 to withdraw the wheel from the support 14, when the plates 4, 5 and the wheel may be turned about the pin 3 into the vertical position. The plates and wheel are then moved sidewise along the pin 3, and are prevented from turning back under the chassis by the engagement of the plate 4 with projections 2a on the plate 2. The plate 5 and wheel 7 are then turned about the pin 10 until the wheel touches the ground for removal.
