Abstract

353,056. Synchronous movements. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., Crown House, Aldwych, London, and MADDOCK, A. J., 34, Regent Place, Rugby. April 15, 1930, No. 11930. [Class 40 (iii).] Two rotating bodies are maintained in synchronism by means of a variable condenser having its plates attached to the respective bodies, changes in capacity of the condenser affecting the supply of power to the controlled body. As shown, a phonic wheel W is rotated by, and in synchronism with, received signals and controls the supply of power to motive means M for the controlled body. The plates P1, P2 of a variable condenser are rotated respectively by the phonic wheel and the motor M, and the variation in capacity of the condenser varies the phase of an alternating voltage impressed on the grid G of a thermionic valve V of the type described in Specification 309,442, [Class 39 (i), Electric lamps, Arc &c.], with respect to the phase of an alternating voltage which is impressed on the anode A of the valve. The resulting change in current passing through the valve alters the speed of the motor to bring the controlled body into synchronism with the phonic wheel. The field of the phonic wheel and the stator of the motor can be rotated to correct large differences in phase.
